The Silver Star

Twelve year old "Bean" Holladay and her fifteen year old sister, Liz, live in a small town in Southern California with their mom,Charlotte. When Bean was just a baby, Charlotte, with her two small girls in tow, left her small home home town in Virginia trying to make a name for herself in the world of music. Charlotte leaves town for a couple of months to 'find herself' and leaves enough money for the girls to get by. While she's gone, the cops start poking around and the girls decide they need to take a bus to Virginia and visit their Uncle Tinsley, who lives in the decaying mansion that their mother grew up in.

In Virginia, they find a world they never knew existed and discover things about themselves and their family that their mother had never told them. Just as the girls are finding a way to fit into this small town that hasn't changed since their mother lived there, something happens to Liz that changes their course forever.

This is a well written book that explores the abuse of adult power and how the human spirit is strong and can overcome the tragedies that we sometimes have to endure.
