Dragonfly

Dragonfly by Julia Golding

Neither Tashi nor Ramil is looking forward to their upcoming marriage, but both are willing to submit in order to unite their people against a growing enemy kingdom. Culture clash proves to be too much for the pair, but just as Tashi is about to call off the union and return home, she and Ramil are captured by their shared enemy. They must put their differences aside and join forces in first escaping and then making the long journey back to Ramil's homeland before misunderstandings in their respective kingdoms about their disappearances lead to war across the land.

If you want a read that is entertaining but simple, this one would do the job nicely.  Its not very original, but that doesn't take away from the book. There is adventure, romance and just enough action to keep it interesting.

The Red Address Book

The Red Address Book
by
Sofia Lundberg

Where should I start the story of my life?  I haven't made any great discoveries or changed history.  I am just an ordinary person.

Doris, a 96 year old, didn't know where to begin her story for her only living relative, Jenny.  Doris began by opening her red address book and telling the story of those listed there.  By telling about her relationship with many of the entries, her life was retold for her niece, Jenny.  It had been a long and good life.

A very interesting book that begins in the 30's and moves forward throughout Doris's life.  I am sure we could also have many good memories if we followed her example and opened our address book and shared the stories of the people in there.

American Duchess: A Novel of Consuelo Vanderbilt

American Duchess: A Novel of Consuelo Vanderbilt
by Karen Harper

American Duchess is based on the life and marriage of Consuelo Vanderbilt, an American heiress forced into a marriage with the ninth Duke of Marlborough. Though she was only 18 and in love with another man, her mother forced her to marry, trading Vanderbilt money for a title. Despite her youth and strict (and sometimes harsh) upbringing, she manages to make a difference in the lives of those around her with her charity work and good will. The book spans her adult life and includes her friendship with Winston Churchill as well as her experiences during the onset of the second World War. Karen Harper writes in a first person narrative, giving the book the feel of a memoir. This book is a new title in the library, and can be found in the Adult Fiction section.

Finding Dorothy

Finding Dorothy
by
Elizabeth Letts

This book is historical fiction based on the life of L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  It tells a lot of the daily life of Frank and his wife and children.  He loved the theater, but had to earn a living for his family and had many different jobs, he was always a storyteller.  He was not alive to witness the filming of the movie, but his wife Maud felt it her duty to make sure his dream was kept alive and accurate.  She was very impressed by the young Judy Garland and offered her support and advice.

The author did a great deal of research to make this book as authentic as possible.  She has written other books which have been very informative as well.

This book can be found in the Adult Fiction section of our library.

The Clockmaker's Daughter

The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton

This book, however, I found rather convoluted with extended characters and subplots that just sort of lost me or left me less than in engaged. At the end most of the loose ends do come together, but the main 'reveal' (I dont want to ruin the plot) was a little unbelievable. I was surprised the character involved in this didn't step up and say something, which they would have due to their relationship with Edward. A little bizarre. I also at the end of the book had to go back through my Kindle using Xray and find out when Juliet had actually 'talked' with Leonard. The answer is she didn't.. she was there, he was there and thats it. How they pieced together she was the girl under the tree and he was the man in the house from1928, ( I spent a solid 10 minutes looking for this info), just isn't there. A neat coincidence but no where is it noted they knew who one another was in that brief minute. Minor details - but just another thing that added to the confusion of this story. All in all I think the book is 'ok'. Not my favorite of this author. I imagine a lot of plot planning went into this novel in order to tie up the tons of characters and their relationships and I appreciate her efforts on this but just wasn't one of my favorites. I did love her imagery of the house on the river bend though and could almost see it in my head. The authors description of 'place and time' (two big components of this novel) are definitely well written.

Skyward: Claim the Stars

Skyward: Claim the Stars
by
Brandon Sanderson

The remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is being attacked frequently by mysterious alien star fighters.  Spensa, a teen age girl, longs to become a pilot to try and help the human race survive. Spensa's world has been under attack for hundreds of years, and she has wanted to help fight the aliens, despite the fact that her father has been labeled a traitor.

This is the first book in the new science fiction series by Sanderson.  I was pulled into the story right from the beginning, there's lots of action and adventure. While training in flight school, Spensa discovers an old air ship hidden in a cave that appears to have a soul, she tries to figure out the history of the airship as she works to fix it. This is a story of war, loyalty and friendship. I am looking forward to book #2.

You can find this book in the Young Adult section of the library.

The Escape Artists: A Band of Daredevil Pilots and the Greatest Prison Break of the Great War

The Escape Artists: A Band of Daredevil Pilots and the Greatest Prison Break of the Great War
by Neal Bascomb

This was an interesting read even though the lead up to the Holzminden escape was a bit long and cumbersome. The author tells the story of many, many escape attempts by various prisoners from different POW camps, so it gets a little confusing. When the book finally arrives to the story of the the Holzminden escape, it was a well-told and amazing story.

Along the way, we learn how differently the enlisted soldier was treated compared to the officers. Even though this was a POW camp and no one was treated well, there were many privileges afforded to the officers that enabled them to attempt escape over and over again.

This book is found in the non-fiction section of our library under 940.4724 Bascomb.

Grateful:the transformative power of giving thanks

I meant to read this before Thanksgiving but ended up finishing it after Christmas. It was a great way to start off the New Year. Grateful: the transformative power of giving thanks offered a new perspective on the combined efforts of individuals to live in thanks. It also highlighted the difference living with gratitude does and can make on society as a whole.

Nine Perfect Strangers

Nine Perfect Strangers
By Liane Moriarty

I have read all of her books and was so excited to see she had a new one, because I have loved them all. Liane Moriarty is so great at delving into character's minds. I loved this one just as much.
Nine people sign up for a health resort retreat that they have been promised will transform them and they will not be the same when they leave.

Frances-  Romance author-  victim of a romance con/scam

Lars- Divorce lawyer, helps scorned women

Tony- Famous Former sports star

Napoleon, Heather, and Zoe- Family dealing with an unspeakable tragedy and trying to deal with the aftermath

Caramel- Recently divorced, mother of 4 young girls, dealing with body image

Ben and Jessica – Young couple, recently won the lottery

The players arrive at the resort and we are told a little bit of background about each, they find it's a little different then expected. The guests are asked to not speak for a few days, given special smoothies to drink, and then when they are finally allowed to start talking again something really strange happens. This started out a little slow for me, and I wasn't sure I would enjoy it as much but then, bam! something so out of the blue happens, it just gets so good, I couldn't stop turning the pages. Each character has problems they are trying to deal with and are forced to confront at this resort. You feel for ever single one of these people and want to them to be happy. Life is hard and people are so so weird and complex, and Liane is at the top of her game writing what she does best.

Shelved in Adult Fiction-  Just like all of her books has some brief language, talk of sex, (nothing graphic)
Pyscological Thriller

In Pieces by Sally Field

In Pieces by Sally Field

One of the most celebrated, beloved, and enduring actors of our time, Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated the nation for more than five decades, beginning with her first TV role at the age of seventeen. (Goodreads)

Sally Field is one of the most vivacious and well known actors of our time. This memoir gives the reader a look into her childhood and early career beginning with her role as Gidget and then Sister Bertrille in The Flying Nun. Because her childhood was difficult and complicated, and she was a survivor of abuse, the memoir can be hard to read at times. But, for anyone who is interested in the "behind the scenes" of the entertainment industry, this book delivers all the highs and lows of Sally Field's career, as well as her complicated relationships with her family and the men in her life.

This book can be found in the non-fiction section of library, as well as on Overdrive both as an e-book and e-audiobook.

(received 4 stars on Goodreads)
