My Name Used To Be Huhammad
by Tito Momen
Muhammad Momen started is religious training at the young age of five. Even though he was not the oldest son, from the time of his birth, his father dreamed, planned and was determined that Muhammad would be an imam, the spiritual leader for their community. When he was five, he began his mornings at 4:45, where he would attend mosque and perform dawn prayer. At this time, his father also gave him a copy of the Qur'an that he was to begin copying it by hand to aid him in memorizing it. Muhammad was very obedient to his father and wanted desperately to make him proud. When he was 17, he was sent to study in Cairo, where he found a whole new world. Through a crazy path, he was eventually exposed to Christianity, and eventually embraced their teachings. Because of his conversion, he was wrongfully imprisoned and spent 15 years in the miserable prison system in Egypt.
His story is incredible and the book is really well written. It gives you a good understanding of his childhood and the wrestle he had within as he begins to question the things he was taught in his youth. Rather than losing his faith when things get tough, he recognizes the hand of God in his life and the miracles that take place.
