Ranger's Apprentice Series by John Flanagan
Fifteen year old Will has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. The Rangers have always scared him in the past, they wear dark cloaks and have shadowy ways. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic. What Will doesn't know is that the Rangers are protectors of the kingdom. The Rangers are highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people, and as Will is about to learn there is a large battle brewing.
There are twelve books in the Ranger's Apprentice series. These are fun adventure books that are easy to pick up and read, especially for boys who may not really love reading. There's lots of action, but the violence is age appropriate and not disturbing. One great element is that the narrative changes points of view so we get to see what's going on with all the different characters during the story.
Loyalty, honesty, and friendship are huge parts of the story, and relationships develop naturally - nothing feels too cliche or forced. Will and his comrades defend their kingdom from threats, and all through battle stratagem, politics and quick thinking. They get into plenty of sticky situations, but they don't always come out without scrapes or serious injury. Overall, these are fun books for older kids, teens, and anyone looking for a fun, easy read.
You can find the Ranger's Apprentice series in the Young Adult section of the library.
