Dead Zone

Dead Zone by Robison Wells

Zasha and Fyodor are the Russians latest secret weapons in their attempt to become the super powers of the world. The Russians have taken over Alaska and are making a move into the rest of the United States.

Aubrey, Jack and the other lambdas are the United States last hope in uncovering how the Russian's secret weapon deactivates any electrical or mechanical object including computers, jets and wristwatches.  Even though most of the lambdas are not even old enough to be in the military, they have been "volunteered" to join and help save their country. Their task is not an easy one, not only do they need to find the Russian's secret weapon, but they need to find a way to destroy it as well.

Dead Zone was a good read even though the characters were somewhat predictable and their achievements were a little over the top. This book is actually a sequel to "Blackout", but can be read as a stand alone.

New Book Club Book

We have added another book to our Book Club Book Collection....

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

Sixteen year old Hazel Grace Lancaster has terminal lung cancer and is currently living on borrowed time. Hazel's mom is trying to encourage her to get a little bit more involved in life and convinces her to go to a cancer survivor group where she meets Augustus "Gus" Waters, whose leg was claimed by a malignant bone tumor.

This is a touching story of two teenagers that have to face more in their young lives than many of us will ever have to deal with.

This book has been recently made into a movie.

Stitching Snow

Essie has been hiding out on the planet, Thanda for the past eight years. She has been able to make a place for herself on the cold, bitter mining planet where she "stitches" or repairs the old mining drones that the miners use in their mines. To earn a little extra, she has proven herself in the "cage" as quite the fighter where she takes on men twice her size and comes out the unmistakable winner.

One evening as she is headed home, an aircraft crash lands in the field not too far from her home. She goes to the crash site to help any survivors and it turns out there is only one. Against her better judgment she agrees to help the lone survivor, Dane, repair the ship and get him on his way.

Once the ship is repaired and Dane prepares to head back into space, events unfold that forces Essie to reevaluate what is important and what her future holds.

This is a fun, futuristic retelling of the fairy tale, Snow White. I was a little worried it may be too similar to the "Lunar Series", and even though there are some similarities "Stitching Snow" is definitely worth the read and can hold it's own.

Personal

Personal by Lee Child

Reacher arrives in Seattle, reads a discarded Army newspaper left on the bus and sees that one of his senior officers from his Army days wants to talk to him urgently. The first shock to the system is that within a couple of hours Reacher finds himself travelling across the US again, but this time he is the only passenger in a luxurious Army executive jet. At the other end he meets two Generals and a couple of CIA operatives (female and pretty of course) who brief him about an unsuccessful sniper attempt on the life of the French President and they believe that the sniper will target a forthcoming G8 meeting of world leaders. The punchline comes when Reacher is told that the main suspect, a former US sniper recently released from 16 years in jail, is also targeting Reacher because he was the military cop who put him behind bars.

All this sends Reacher on the same jet over to Paris to check out the unsuccesful shot. There he meets heavies from the intelligence services of France, Russia and the UK who are chasing down other top snipers who may have gone rogue. The chase then takes Reacher and Casey Nice, one of the CIA operatives (female and pretty of course) over to the UK, undercover this time, to prevent the assassination of one or more world leaders.

In the course of trying to save the world almost single-handed, Reacher takes on powerful Serbian and British gangsters, takes out more victims in unarmed conflict at one time than ever before, and meets an opponent who is considerably taller, larger and heavier.
